Friday

Maybe I shouldn’t have stopped writing in my diary.

I told my friends my great dance idea. I told them how we could either make up a dance. Or do a dance with a skit.

“Dancing is so much fun,” I said. “And I could totally show you so many cool moves now.”

But none of my friends looked like it sounded fun to them.

“I don’t know,” Kayla said. “A dance?”

“Yeah,” Emily Grace said. “How come it gets to be something you care about, Dani? Why don’t the rest of us get to do what we like?”

I really didn’t get this. Why wouldn’t any of them like my idea? It sounded fun!

“We don’t have to do my idea,” I said. “I just thought it would be fun. And my friend Paige is coming to visit soon. She could help, too. She knows lots of dance moves.”

Emily Grace’s face was getting pink. “Paige isn’t in the talent show. The talent show is only for people who live here.”

“She wouldn’t be in the talent show,” I said. “She would only help us. Stella Strike’s concert is supposed to be amazing. Don’t you want to win the tickets, Emily Grace?”

Emily Grace’s face went from pink to red. “STOP CALLING ME EMILY GRACE!”

She yelled this at me. She actually yelled this at me!

And she didn’t stop there. “All day long you’ve been calling me Emily Grace,” she said. “You’ve even got Jasmine calling me Emily Grace. I’ve already told you. I’ve told you over and over. Call. Me. Emily!!“

We all just stared at her.

“Okay, fine!” I said. “Emily! I’ll call you Emily! I don’t see why you want to be called Emily. But whatever, I’ll call you just Emily. I just wish you would stop trying to be a different person!“

Just Emily jumped out of her chair. “I’m a different person? You are a different person. Not me!”

“What are you talking about?” I asked. “You’re the one who is into clothes now. Everything you say now is about fashion. You never used to talk about fashion before. Now it’s all you talk about. Well, that and Tyler Mitchells!”

“Yeah, well, all you ever talk about is dance!” she said. “Dance dance dance dance dance. You can’t even walk without dancing. Not everyone likes dance like you do. Sometimes people just want to walk in the grocery store without everyone looking at them!“

I didn’t have anything else to say. I couldn’t believe her. I wasn’t the one who had changed. Just Emily was the one who was different.

She wasn’t done talking. “You wish Paige was here instead of me,” she said. “All you want to do is hang out with Paige. You think Paige is better than me. Because Paige can dance, and I can’t!”

“That’s not true!” I said. “That’s not true at all.”

“You did say Paige would help us with the talent show,” Kayla said.

“That’s because she’s in dance class with me!” I said. “Not because I think she’s better than you!”

“And you get annoyed when I talk about Tyler Mitchells,” Just Emily said.
